INTERFAX-CHINA - China TieTong, the country''s smallest fixed-line operator, has in cooperation with ZTE held a showcase for the carrier''s new "Yi Xun Tong" digital trunked service in the city of Changchun, in Jilin Province.

China TieTong''s new digital trunked services are based on ZTE''s GoTa digital trunked system. The "Yi Xun Tong" service, will provide digital trunked services to institutional and enterprise clients in the public security, communications, mining, and public service sectors. China TieTong said it would formally launch commercial trials for the new service in the first half of 2005.

Digital trunked systems provide wireless voice and data services over a limited area, similar to current Xiaolingtong, or PHS, services. China TieTong, which is unlike to receive a license to operate 3G mobile services, has been actively looking to expand its business scope, especially into more profitable value-added services. Both China Telecom and China Netcom, the country''s largest fixed-line carriers, are expected to receive 3G mobile licenses. Consequently, there is a real danger that China TieTong, which is already much smaller than Telecom and Netcom, could fall even further behind its two competitors with the rollout of 3G mobile services.

In January of 2005, ZTE''s GoTa system won two contracts to provide equipment for China TieTong''s "Yi Xun Tong" services in the cities of Shenyang and Changchun. It was also the first large-scale application of ZTE''s GoTa system in China. ZTE''s GoTa solutions were referred as the only digital trunked product in accord with China''s national standard.
